Bedbugs, what are the symptoms of an infestation?

Services Éco-Extermination inc. gives you the best advice on how to recognize the signs of a bedbug’s infestation in your home or business premises and what’s the best reaction to adopt if it is true.

What are bedbugs?

Bedbugs are nocturnal blood-sucking insects (they feed on blood) of a brown-red color of 3 to 7mm. Their favorite place to live is the bedroom, in dark and often difficult to access places.

Although, they do not transmit disease, their presence and their bites can have disastrous consequences on the health of individuals, including causing depression.

Bedbugs can live an average of 5 to 6 months and can even survive for a year when they go into a dormant state.

Their infestation can be detected by the presence of bites on the body as well as by the presence of black spots and blood on the edges of the bed, sheets, and pillows.

The itching may be severe depending on the person bitten.

How do bedbugs spread?

In opposition to popular belief, bedbugs affect both clean and unsanitary homes and premises, although a messy interior provides better hiding places for their development.

Bedbugs spread primarily through the salvage or use of already infested clothing, mattresses, sofas, and other textile items.

They can also be spread following the move of infested items (textiles and furniture).

Finally, you can also bring some with you during a trip or a stay in an infested place by direct contact with your clothes and other household fabrics (sheets, towels, etc.).

How to react when the infestation is confirmed?

The first thing to do is to immediately notify your landlord, property manager or your association of co-owners. This must call in professional exterminators like us to confirm the presence of the pests and assess the severity of the infestation.

If the infestation is limited, you can eventually stop it by placing all your clothes and textiles in an airtight bag and putting everything directly in a dryer for at least 30 minutes using the hottest cycle. Then dispose of the bags in an outside garbage bin.

Regular and rigorous vacuuming of your interior can also be a good preventive measure.

In any case, the greatest reactivity is necessary to prevent the situation from getting worse.
